Persian New Year @ Arya Restaurant (Event Photography)

Fera and Mike, owners of Arya Global Cuisine in Cupertino, invited me to capture their Persian New Year festivities happening at their restaurant. The place was packed with people eating from the Prix Fixe menu and dancing to the live music. I took some posed shots in front of the “Haft-Sin Table” which is important to the Persian culture – but mostly I captured a bunch of candids and usual event stuff. I do a lot of work for Franco Uomo and San Francisco Shirt Company – both high-end clothing designers with stores in Santana Row. Angelina, the manager at SF Shirt Co., was involved with a cocktail party fashion show preceding Intero’s 8th Annual Achievement Awards at The Fairmont Hotel, San Jose. Wow that was a mouthful. Basically Angelina had some male and female models elevated on platforms above the throngs of excited partygoers. I took photos of both the models and the crowd – just some general event coverage. Fairmont Hotel Decorated Ballrooms (Commercial Interior Photography)

The newly redecorated ballrooms at The Fairmont Hotel San Jose are ideal venues for enormous (and more intimate) corporate events and weddings. The Imperial Ballroom is simply gigantic (13,000 square feet / 1,150 – 1,400 guests), and this evening it was actually split into two separate rooms (the red and blue pictures). Even split up, each room is still able to accommodate hundreds of partygoers. The pink photo is the Regency Ballroom (8,300 square feet / 642 – 980 guests) down on the first floor. The lighting, table decorations, flowers and more can truly transform each ballroom to the needs of each individual event. All three of these rooms were set up for parties this evening on March 12, 2011. It was definitely challenging lighting for pictures – especially the intense colors – but they came out pretty well. Paolo’s Restaurant – Rambus Party Setup (Commercial Interior Architecture Photography)

Carolyn and Jalil, owners of Paolo’s Restaurant in downtown San Jose, needed some professional photos showing how their banquet space could be decorated for an event. Bloomster’s had the centerpieces decked out in beautiful array, the lighting and other decorations were just really well executed. The event for the evening was an annual party for Rambus; the highlight of the decorations was the full-ice bar (yes the whole bar was made of ice!) – including an ice-luge sculpture for perfectly chilled cocktails. I couldn’t stay for the party as I had more event setup photos to take at The Fairmont Hotel, but here’s a few photos below. More pics at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Photos of Japanese Tsunami Hitting the Santa Cruz Harbor (Natural Disaster Photography)

I woke up this morning to helicopters overhead, thinking – hmm, that can’t be good. Bleary eyed, I picked up my iPhone, loaded Facebook and realized that Japan had had a massive earthquake, and tsunamis were headed to our west coast. My wife had already left to take our eldest daughter to school, so I grabbed my cameras, laptop and youngest daughter (sans shoes) and rushed away from the coast to where my wife was. After we determined amongst the other parents armed with iPhones that we weren’t in imminent danger, I went back home, donned my cameras and walked down to the harbor by my house.

There were tons of people lining the waterway and on the bridge that spans the harbor. Immediately I realized something odd – the water, normally still, was running like a swift river. It was dark with mud and debris, and I could tell some docks had gotten loose and some boats were adrift, running into other boats and the pillars of the cement bridge. After a few minutes the water came to a standstill, then reversed direction, setting off more bumper-boat action. I walked around for a couple hours, talking with people and documenting the event. A loose sailboat gets snagged by its topsail under the bridge - later the current reversed and this boat runs into some docked boats and mostly capsizes - then later rights itself, but with a list

Colors tweaked a little to show the turbulent water and mud

Finally the Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol attempt to control things

No shortage of police presence. The crowds remained calm.

Lucy the Goose, and controversial long time resident of the harbor, swam around honking at everything - abviously flustered about her typically quiet environment. Glad to see she was okay.

It's hard to get a sense for the swiftness of the current in a still photo - but look at the water moving around the vertical wooden poles - I wouldn't want to be floating in it!

For all intents and purposes, a calm, beautiful day in Santa Cruz.

I had the pleasure of covering the 2011 State of the Valley conference this Friday, February 18th. There were so many inspiring speakers, most notably our 3rd President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. At times the message was rather sobering – the state of our local, state and national economy and what needs to be done in order to prevent our children from inheriting the mess – but underlying everything was a consistent, positive message of hope, that we can use our collective intellect and desire to do good to overcome our weaknesses and persevere. The Rays Reunion (Family Photography)

The all grown up Ray siblings got together in Saratoga to catch up on old times and visit with mom. They live in different parts of the country, so it had been over a decade since they’d all been in the same place, but you wouldn’t know it the way they playfully joked around and innocently harassed each other. At times I could easily imagine them as kids, carousing and rough-housing, but all in good fun. It was a pleasure to spend times as a “fly on the wall” – catching some candid moments and getting some nice, posed group photos. Four Seasons Silicon Valley / Palo Alto – 5th Anniversary (Event Photography)

I’ve been the un-official, official photographer for the Four Seasons since they opened up in Palo Alto five years ago. They use me for all the important stuff they can make room in their budgets for, and it’s always a blast – the management at this Four Seasons hotel is SO cool – every year at the company holiday party they perform on-stage for all the employees – that takes some serious cojones, my friends. This year the management team did a little ballroom-dance-turned-lady-gaga, replete with ripped off clothing to reveal the sassy dance-party undergarments. Very entertaining, indeed! Here’s a few photos from this evening’s very special fifth anniversary holiday party. San Francisco Shirt Company Grand Opening and Fashion Show (Event Photography)

My friends at Franco Uomo just opened their new business at Santana Row – and it’s called San Francisco Shirt Company. It’s high-end, fashionable, and mostly for the ladies. I took some interiors and details of the store last week, and today was the official grand opening, replete with a red carpet fashion show (models courtesy HMM), live music, sweet hats from BRIM, and of course, great looking threads. I’m by no means qualified to write about anything fashion-related, but the outfits looked great, and the crowd loved it. Angelina is the mastermind behind all this great stuff, although she won’t admit it. Check the store out for yourself – it’s smack in the middle of Santana Row in San Jose – right across the street from Hotel Valencia.

I took some candids before and after the show, as well as some runway shots. Nothing too fantastic or posed – just off the cuff kinda work. Some is good, some not so much. Again, you judge.
