Ok, well I shot this beach house recently. And of course this really, really sexy mansion in Portola Valley, but mostly it’s not something I’m asked to do much. Maybe I’m too expensive, I don’t know. But it’s fun, and waaaay easier than chasing toddlers around on a beach and getting them to look at me and smile. So in that respect, it’s refreshing to shoot a house once in a while.

Monique Pacurariu is the listing agent for this house, and she’s familiar enough with my work to know I’d make her look good, which means the house should attract more potential buyers. Maybe you here, reading this post, are looking for a home in Scotts Valley, California (only a stone’s throw from Santa Cruz!). If so, please contact Monique for serious inquiries.

Why it’s cool & how I got it: If you’ve been following my work for a while, you’ll know I am fairly adept at this whole High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography thing. It’s a popular technique of late, and involves taking multiple shots at different exposures and then blending them together into one. Sometimes it works, often it doesn’t. And it’s really easy to overdo – which is why so many photography snobs poo-poo the whole HDR process. It’s too bad, because when it’s done well, it can be simply stunning. I’ve tweaked my own process over the years, and use it most often for my architectural interiors and exteriors. In this case I used it to shoot this sweet little Ferrari, parked in a large garage. The only light is coming from the overhead fluorescents. I used a tripod to shoot 7 different exposures at varying shutter speeds, then blended them all together to get what you see below. It’s a large piece of land with expansive yard, beautiful garden, separate garage, storage, play area, and of course an amazing three story-ish house that I have many fond memories of. Their kids are in middle/high school now, so it makes more sense to live closer to town. I’m sad to say goodbye to the place (as I’m sure they are as well), but hopefully it will go to a family that will appreciate all it has to offer. I was honored they asked me to take all the photos of the property – this will help everyone remember it at its finest state. Here’s a select few, the rest are here.

People may be familiar with a similarly-named restaurant in Mountain View, and this is the newest incarnation of that well-loved location. I met with the owner over two days, and although there was a language barrier, I resorted to simply “doing my thing.” I got a nice blend of details, interiors and nighttime shots with customers present. I got some nice action photos back in the kitchen, as well as intercepting a few dishes headed for customer tables (this is not the way I typically work, but I couldn’t convince the owner to prepare dishes simply to shoot…). Definitely a challenging shoot, but ultimately a successful one, as when the owner saw the photos he was really excited. C’est la vie… Here’s a few of my faves, click here for more!

I did my usual HDR-thang with the interiors, shot some details, and got some nice food shots of a few select dishes. Of course I sampled everything after shooting, so it was a highly enjoyable experience… the watermelon with crab meat and avocado especially delighted my tastebuds, can you taste these photos below? Please do yourself a favor and visit John Bentley’s as soon as humanly possible. And no, the sub-par photos currently adorning their website are not mine, as you can plainly see.

Owen and Marie Jobson have done a fantastic job with their first restaurant, Blue Rock BBQ (San Jose). The interior, signage and and identity all indicate a corporate franchise – but alas, this is simply a well executed vision by two entrepreneurs who are passionate about southern cooking and bringing service back to the service industry. In fact, every single time I’ve gone in to Blue Rock to get my pulled pork sandwich and slice of delicious pecan pie, Owen or Marie (or both) are always present. If more small businesses took this hands-on approach to ensuring quality service, perhaps we’d have more success stories on our hands, recession or not.

I’ve gotten to know these guys over the past year, and although we’ve talked about doing a shoot, we never got around to scheduling it. Finally, Owen decided to take it upon himself to hand over a generous stack of gift cards, effectively putting the ball in my court to get something on the books. Needless to say, the shoot commenced to their great satisfaction. Here’s a few for y’all to enjoy :) More to see here.

So round one for Morton’s was last week, this week we focused on promoting the space for weddings and parties. Morton’s is world-renowned for their excellent cuts of cow-flesh (and who doesn’t love that!), and in that regard they don’t disappoint. But for some reason people don’t see Morton’s as a kid-friendly or fun party-friendly location – but let me assure you it IS! They love families and can’t wait to host your next event there. During this shoot we focused on how the place would look for an event, large party or wedding reception, as well as highlighting the bar and patio areas. Enjoy, and thanks for lookin’.

Lion and Compass is a really elegant restaurant in Sunnyvale, perfect for a Sunday brunch or any time you want to impress your friends / family / clients. It has a nice, open, airy feel with lots of natural light, and the food is superb. And the free valet parking is a nice touch! Tarragon is an amazing restaurant owned and managed by Dottia Bilic (and hubby) located in downtown Sunnyvale – you know – Murphy Street. Downstairs is a first-class restaurant with open kitchen, upstairs is a large banquet and patio space perfect for weddings/receptions. It’s a great venue to eat and to party, and I highly recommend them for both!
