Christy Evans, Yoga Teacher (Portrait Photography)

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Christy Evans, a recent SoCal refugee looking to ply her Yoga trade up in these northern parts, more specifically downtown Campbell, California at aptly named The Yoga Studio. Christy is spunky, vivacious, cute, and talented – and I learned all that in the first five minutes. Her goal was to get some professional photos of herself in different yoga poses to use for her website, as well as headshots to use for wherever she happens to be working. We went for a clean, bright approach to lighting and styling the photos without any props to clutter the scene. I think they came out pretty well, but judge for yourself! Rachel Sattinger is a local Santa Cruz Yoga teacher – we had a photography session for her Kids Yoga class at Pacific Edge Climbing Gym. Jada Giberson (Sunrise Yoga Portraits)

I met Jada, a fellow resident of the Seabright area of Santa Cruz, at 6:30am over at Aldo’s by the harbor. I got dressed in the dark this morning, so I was glad to see I hadn’t put on anything backwards when we saw each other. When we’d discussed the plans for the shoot the previous day, Jada said she just needed some new headshots for her business website she’s in the process of building. Jada is a wellness/nutritional counselor and yoga instructor, so I suggested we do a sunrise session at the beach – because I’d always envisioned this would be cool to do. As soon the words left my mouth, I was like, “What were you thinking Chris? You’re not a morning person!!” But the cat was out of the bag, and Jada was excited about the idea, so I went with it.

I’m glad I did.

In only a few minutes, the sky was lightening up with gorgeous hues of yellow, orange and blue. I grabbed my gear and we headed out towards Walton Lighthouse, the iconic landmark for Seabright Beach. I asked Jada to get warmed up while I tested my lighting equipment and waited for the ambient light increase a bit. Soon we were shooting away and having a great time. We experimented with a few poses on top of the tetradons (yeah, I’m super-smart because I know what those giant cement “jacks” are called). Of course we picked that one tetradon with the tiled red heart embedded on it. Cool stuff. Then we moved out past the lighthouse to the large, raised cement block – it looks like a foundation for something that used to be on top of it. It was all wet from the high-tide waves crashing over that area, which was cool because it reflected Jada when she stood on top of it. We got a gorgeous series of poses, and even one “money” shot with waves crashing in the air behind Jada, as if she were summoning the ocean spirits to do her bidding. Of course as soon as I turned my back to the water, Jada summoned a rogue wave that almost took me out and got my pants and one of my cameras all wet. No biggie, nothing destroyed – my fault for not paying attention!

Skin Sprit (Local Biz)

I love Stacey, the manager at Skin Spirit. She’s full of ideas and life and doesn’t hesitate to share and give back to her clients. I met up with Stacey to discuss how to promote their services – with this economy, anything even remotely considered “luxury” is sure to get cut from the family budget. But cellulite and skin imperfections persist, bad economy or not – and, well, who says a facial is less important than paying the electricity bill? The economy notwithstanding, Stacey is doing a stellar job keeping the doctors, nurses, aestheticians, etc. occupied. Give Me a Y-O-G-A!

Linda McGrath of Yoga Source Los Gatos needed some group and individual shots of her Yoga teachers. We met at the front lawn of Los Gatos High School, which is big, beautiful, green, dotted with tall palm trees, which would help accentuate the reaching poses. It was hot as hell, and everyone was wearing all black bodywear, so I made the executive decision to do the shoot in the shade. It was a sunny day, so I had the lights at practically full power to cover the distance they had to be from the subjects for the larger group shots, as well as to bring down the ambient light.

We did a bunch of small groups and some individual headshots (full gallery here) over the course of a couple hours. Everyone was so nice! I’ve taken a few yoga classes, and they certainly know what they’re doing at Yoga Source. It’s no wonder they’re so highly acclaimed as one of the best Yoga Studios in the Bay Area.
