Kurt Kemling is a good friend of mine (even though we’ve only met a couple times) – it’s weird how you can get to know someone without ever spending time with them. He’s also a professional photographer that I admire, with two adorable girls near my own girls’ age, as well as a wife named Beckie (mine’s Becky). Needless to say, we’ve been meaning to have our families meet up so we could “shoot” each other. Because we’re both busy, we set up a day two months ahead of time – today the day finally arrived, and it was SO much fun! Not only are the Kemlings fun to hang out with, they make some great photos. Meg & Jack (Pregnant + Toddler)

Meg wanted a few photos while she was in her third trimester – but because she also had her toddler with her, we of course included him as well. Toddlers are usually, well, challenging when it comes to trying to tell them what to do, or stay in one place, or look at the camera, or – well, anything! Father + Daughter + Beach + Bike

I ran into Tim and his daughter while conducting another family portrait session at Natural Bridges beach – I was struck by the scene they presented, a colorful retro bike and a father spending some quality time with his young, adoring daughter. I asked if I could take their portrait real quick as they presented such a tempting subject for any photographer. Tim obliged, and we later connected over email. Turns out he works for Adobe – my most favoritest software company in the world… score! Here’s the two shots that I took before continuing on with my other shoot.

JT & Chloe’s mom hired me to take some photos of her kids as a surprise for father’s day. They are super cute, and very sassy with each other. I tried to capture all the in-between moments, the tickling before the pushing, the hand-holding before the pinching, the arm around the shoulder before the headlock – you know, the moments that make you forget you and your sibling ever fought, and that because of this visual record, you begin to doubt that you ever fought at all in the first place… Enjoy the slideshow above – if you’re on a non-flash-compatible mobile device, you’ll see a bunch of thumbnails instead, but you CAN see a non-flash video slideshow on Vimeo here!

First Graders Attack Monterey Bay Aquarium

Ok, so forgive me the dramatic headline. I’m on a roll for non-professional posts on my blog, so here’s one more; I tend to avoid putting personal stuff here, but I thought there were a few gems from today that I had to share. Well more than a few – between my wife and I we had 8 kids to chaperone at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, so we had our hands full and there were plenty of photo opportunities. Usually my littlest one clings to me when we visit this place (which makes taking pictures challenging), but she latched onto several other over her big sister’s classmates, freeing me up to snap a few candids here and there.

I was surprised how good all the kids were, and the aquarium wasn’t as crazy busy as we’d experienced in the past – probably because it was a weekday. The newest exhibits are jaw-dropping, I really loved the seahorses. The exhibit about climate change was also really, really well done. Highly interactive and informative, yet scientific and fun.

My coverage of the day is split between all the candid moments I witnessed throughout the day and the wondrous animals exhibited at the aquarium. Wherever possible I tried to join the two, to show some mixed species interaction, if you will. The penguins, sea otters, bat rays and sea turtles all seemed visibly interested in the curious faces on the far side of the plexiglass, it was a joy to behold. Strawberry Day at Gault Elementary

Stawberry Day at Gault Elementary (my daughter’s school) is full of (you guessed it) strawberry-related activities, the core of which is a little hide-and-seek in the special outdoor “Life Lab,” the expansive garden that the teachers and kids maintain. The kids were having a ton of fun, and I had a great time chasing them around. Gault is the greenest school around, and they’re proud to show it off!

Today I met up with Wayne and family at the Coyote Creek trail head in Morgan Hill for their family portrait session. It was a nostalgic trip as I used to live a stone’s throw from where we met, and we couldn’t have chosen a better time of year for the area. Instead of dry fields of brown grass, everything was lush and green from the recent storms. Luckily this sweet family was as adventurous as they were friendly, and followed me through poisoned oak and abandoned buildings alike to get some great shots! Since Wayne is an officer of the law I felt relatively sure we wouldn’t be fined for any mild trespassing we may have been guilty of. Enjoy the photos, I posted my favorites in a slideshow below! Four Seasons Lights Up Their Christmas Tree

The folks at Four Seasons, East Palo Alto know how to throw a tree-lighting party. The place was swarming with giggling children and parents desperately seeking out steaming coffee, or perhaps the famous hot chocolate put out by the high-end hotel. Regardless, there was no shortage of things to do: an outside movie theater, cookie decorating, arts & crafts, snow [bubble] machine, and of course, Santa. East Palo Alto mayor Ruben Abrica, ignoring the fact that his foot was in a cast, said a few words to the large crowd before the dramatic lighting of the beautiful Christmas tree. Sammy & Josh Davidson (Bro + Sis Portraits)

Samantha and Josh Davidson are only 15 months apart, making them practically twins in my book. I’ve known them since they were toddlers, and it’s been a joy to watch them turn into young adults. They are so much fun to photograph because they are unabashedly unafraid of the camera, and… they do whatever I say. It’s refreshing after trying to shoot little kids, or god forbid, my own offspring.

We walked around Vasona Park in Los Gatos looking for interesting places and random props. I love this park, it’s so huge and there’s always something new to discover. They are just starting to put together the festival of lights, so we had to avoid knocking any of that stuff over. The other thing to watch out for is the ubiquitous poop pellets (not all dry!) left by the resident (and numerous) goose population. I assure you they are no joking matter!
