Faultline Brewery in Sunnyvale needed some new shots, so of course I was there to do what I do best – eat food! Did I just say that? Um… well, I shot it, THEN ate it, like a good boy. This is actually quite a nice location for a wedding (Sarah + Matt), there’s lots of indoor banquet space + the outside is basically a huge park with a pond and ducks and everything!

So I definitely was not prepared for the number of interior photos I’d be shooting for Morton’s the Steakhouse in San Jose. When I assured them it would only take a couple of hours, they hesitated, unsure of whether I was grasping the entirety of their needs. You see, usually I go into a place and shoot every room from different angles + details; but here we did this, but with different variations for each space – and some rooms had wall dividers so of course we had to show all the different combinations… and to top it off I came back the next week (see future post here) to shoot the same thing all over again, but with wedding-themed table settings, flowers, etc. Really it was a TON more work for Morton’s staff since they had to move tables and settings around, constantly trying to keep ahead of me. But in the end, it all worked out great, and their CEO loves the photos so much I’ll be doing the San Francisco location next… and then who knows what’s next?

I met Gaurav through my Yelp profile, he originally wanted me to take photos of his actual proposal. I was thinking, cool, I will finally be hired to to Schmauch-arazzi work! But alas, plans changed – I guess the pressure was too great. However, his fiancee said “yes” this morning so I made my way down the coast to meet the newly engaged couple at Ventana Inn, Big Sur. They have a private little wedding area with a gorgeous panoramic view of the ocean, so we started our photo shoot there. After 20 minutes or so the three of us hopped in my mustang and drove down to Pfeiffer Beach (not the direct route, mind you – it’s an unmarked road and we had to ask the locals even though we had a map!).
Once we made our way down the two-mile, single-car-width road to the beach parking lot, everything was looking pretty familiar. I’d been here a couple years ago, but had forgotten about it because I was there for only 5 minutes – the wind was blowing SO hard you couldn’t see. Well today wasn’t much different, although the sand mostly stuck to stinging our legs… When we got to the actual beach we saw a Jewish wedding ceremony, the hoopa flappin’ like crazy in the wind. I felt bad for them, but not so much because I had to figure out how to make our shoot work!
I’m glad Gaurav and Isha have adventurous spirits, even if I did have to coax it out of them. We crawled over rocks, through ice-cold water, braved stinging gusts of sandy wind, nested in the tall grass, crawled around the treacherous caves, and even climbed a tree. Even though I was using my bare speedlights and no umbrella or softbox, my lightstand still managed to blow over a couple times – but no lasting damage thank goodness. The worst thing that happened was one of my socks blew away, I think my clothes dryer will be jealous. At the very end, sweet, disheveled, freezing, east-coaster Isha finally informed me she’s more of an “indoorsy” type… OOPS! My bad. Thanks for braving through the elements with me!

Ok, so forgive me the dramatic headline. I’m on a roll for non-professional posts on my blog, so here’s one more; I tend to avoid putting personal stuff here, but I thought there were a few gems from today that I had to share. Well more than a few – between my wife and I we had 8 kids to chaperone at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, so we had our hands full and there were plenty of photo opportunities. Usually my littlest one clings to me when we visit this place (which makes taking pictures challenging), but she latched onto several other over her big sister’s classmates, freeing me up to snap a few candids here and there.
I was surprised how good all the kids were, and the aquarium wasn’t as crazy busy as we’d experienced in the past – probably because it was a weekday. The newest exhibits are jaw-dropping, I really loved the seahorses. The exhibit about climate change was also really, really well done. Highly interactive and informative, yet scientific and fun.
My coverage of the day is split between all the candid moments I witnessed throughout the day and the wondrous animals exhibited at the aquarium. Wherever possible I tried to join the two, to show some mixed species interaction, if you will. The penguins, sea otters, bat rays and sea turtles all seemed visibly interested in the curious faces on the far side of the plexiglass, it was a joy to behold. I had a quick shoot today with Lee Duvall’s Medallion Steakhouse in Burlingame. She wanted some interiors of the restaurant that opened late last year – and since this is my specialty I was on the case. We managed to shoot a tasty-looking steak (it was wayyy too rare to eat unfortunately) and some crab cakes, paired with appropriate vino, of course 🙂

Stawberry Day at Gault Elementary (my daughter’s school) is full of (you guessed it) strawberry-related activities, the core of which is a little hide-and-seek in the special outdoor “Life Lab,” the expansive garden that the teachers and kids maintain. The kids were having a ton of fun, and I had a great time chasing them around. Gault is the greenest school around, and they’re proud to show it off!

Gutter Patrol wanted a postcard mailer to help promote their window cleaning services. Since this is GoodEye Photography + Design, I put on both my photographer and design hats to come up with a concept that would attract attention and communicate the message. It took me a while to sell the husband & wife team on the idea of a really dirty window, but my years in advertising experience have proven that sometimes you have to go extreme to get noticed. I was pretty sure no other window-washing companies were doing anything like this, so I felt good that the idea was new, if not unusual.
Eric Branecki, the owner, spent the day before packing the window with dirt and pebbles. When I got there, he asked me what I thought – it basically looked too dang neat, like it was a perfect wall of dirt. I needed it to be a little more organic and chaotic. It’s tough because it’s obvious that someone’s house windows would never ever get this dirty to begin with (unless you were in a hurricane), but it had to look a little more realistic.
I had Eric hose down the window some until it looked more “realistic.” I knew I wanted to put the main tagline on the clean section of the window, but I was able to do some nifty Photoshoppin’ to make it look like the “Dirty Windows?” is just inside the house with the mud and streaks casting a shadow onto it. The result is a highly textured, graphical image that definitely stands out of the crowd.
The rear design was inspired by the previous designer’s work (CJ Design), but completely recreated from scratch and branded with the window cleaning message. People keep asking me “Did you really take that photo,” or, “Did you photoshop that picture together?” – so to put the questions to rest I’m writing this here blog post. As you can plainly see in the top left photo, the clouds, grass, cows and lone tree are all part of the original landscape. Of course the magazine cover has some subtle Photoshoppin’ going on – I’m particularly proud of the cloud extraction over the logo, it worked out exactly as I’d envisioned it. And the cover even has a couple of talking cows – how cool is that? Here’s a detail shot of the black talking cow on the right…
So as the cow plainly says, I took the above photo while walking along the Stanford Dish trail (I dramatized the lost part, but it could’ve happened!). I was thinking of green cover ideas, and since we’d just had all that rain, I was envisioning those hills off 280 where that big satellite dish is, but I wasn’t sure where I could get a good vantage point for them. A lot of the best places are private property, and I was afraid I’d have to go trespassing.
I pulled off at Alpine Rd. and parked at Webb Ranch, mostly because I’d done some photography with the owner Gary Webb a while back, and didn’t think he’d mind. I walked across the street and found myself on a bike trail that eventually led to a road that led to the entrance to the Stanford Dish Trail. There were big signs saying it isn’t a public park and to stay on the trail, etc. etc. – I saw some other people walking on it so figured as long as I didn’t feed the squirrels and chase the cows I wouldn’t have any guards tackling me.
I was walking in wool pants and long-sleeved shirt, donning my Nikon D3 with 70-200/2.8 lens on my Spider Holster (see my review here), and my Nikon D700 with 17-35/2.8 lens on my BlackRapid RS-5 strap over my shoulder, and did I mention that it’s all uphill to the dish? And that it was hot? And that I brought no water? I took it easy, and shot whatever looked interesting along the way. The weather was gorgeous, the clouds were all poofy and dramatically set in the cerulean blue sky, the fields were expansive and greeeen, and the cows, well… the cows were all laying around chewing cud, as cows will do. The money shot (above) was captured about halfway to the top with my D3/70-200 combo, and I was pretty sure it was gonna be a winner when I saw the composition. But I hiked all the way up to the dish because I’m not as lazy as I’d like to think, and I have to say it’s quite a nice little trail. I’ll have to go back again (with shorts) and do the whole loop.
There’s not much else to say, the photo was strong and I wanted to keep the cover clean and un-cluttered. My solution to avoiding a big Reader’s Choice Ballot snipe was to simply have another talking cow bubble. It was really the only design solution to be had, if you think about it.

The inn truly shines at night
My wife and I recently stayed at Mill Rose Inn, nestled near downtown Half Moon Bay. It may not boast an ocean view, but once you walk into the secluded gardens, you’re immersed in an oasis of comfort and class. You’ll feel like royalty occupying one of the six unique rooms – the design of each is decidedly antique, but not over the top or gaudy. Eve and Terry, the owners, are at your beck and call, happy to cater to your needs. It was nice to know that the contents of the fridge and liquor on the table were complimentary; we didn’t feel like we were being nickel & dimed. There’s a secluded jacuzzi gazebo that can be reserved; it’s quite romantic, especially with all the twinkling lights adding sparkle to the night. The beds and linens are so comfortable, you won’t be missing your home anytime soon!
Breakfast spared no expense with delicious champagne, fresh fruit, a wonderful banana-orange-juice concoction, the best mexican hot chocolate I’ve ever had, croissants, bacon, and a curious egg dish that defies explanation but delights the tastebuds. There are many nooks throughout the property where I was tempted to curl up with a good book, but alas I was on the clock and had to earn my keep with some photography. I highly recommend visiting Mill Rose Inn for a special experience you won’t forget.

Soquel High School Concert Choir
The Eddy Awards is an annual event honoring outstanding individuals in the Santa Cruz school district. Whether teachers, administrators or parents – the honorees truly deserve to be recognized for their selfless commitment to the youth of Santa Cruz. The Soquel High School Concert Choir (directed by Mr. Mark Bidelman) performed several songs which were simply amazing!
On a technical note, the lighting was terrible, and there was no room to bring in lights, plus all the walls and ceiling were painted black, so bouncing light was not gonna happen. It was pretty much a worst-case scenario, but I managed to get some decent shots using both on-camera flash (SB-800) or some available low-light shots with the d700 + 85mm/1.4 lens.

I deal in the advertising business every day. I know it can work, and that sometimes it doesn’t. I think one of the toughest decisions for any business is not whether to advertise or not – you really have to – it’s where to spend those advertising dollars. Then you have to figure out how to track that investment, to try and assess its worth. It’s probably a lot like keeping track of stocks and bonds, knowing when and where to invest, when to liquidate your assets or go all in. Okay, so it’s kinda like Wall Street and poker, but I digress. It’s a necessary evil.
In 2010, your advertising dollar is going to go a lot further than it did four or five years ago. When the economy turned sour, one of the first things businesses cut down on was their advertising budgets. It makes sense from an emotional standpoint – you have to pay your bills and employees first – but from a business standpoint it’s the worst idea ever. For one thing, when the economy goes downhill, people are still picking up papers, looking at ads – maybe even more often than before. People are looking for discounts or deals, and if your business has effectively pulled out, those impressions are going to your competitor instead – the guy that somehow managed to cut back elsewhere but still retain an advertising budget.
Once you’ve found the media outlets you feel will most effectively reach your target audience and demographic, make sure you hire a competent designer and photographer to ensure your ad campaign is unique, eye-catching, useful to the consumer, and just overall kick-ass. (Insert GoodEye Photography +Design services here) Don’t be afraid to negotiate with the paper / magazine / radio station / tv station for better rates, partial bartering of services, whatever. 2010 is all about negotiation in a way that benefits everyone.
“So what about GoodEye?” you ask. While I’ve relied heavily on word-of-mouth as it has pretty much kept me fully occupied, I recognize the fact that I need to get my name out there as much as possible. I am easily found on google (search “good eye” and I’m right under Bruce Springsting’s YouTube video haha), have some great Yelp reviews, have a strong Facebook presence, and even a twitter account, which was last updated in September 2009 so don’t bother following me… I belong to quite a few online photography/wedding communities and lead generation services, but man there’s just so much out there that I’d rather just hit the street and meet people.
That being said, I did recently barter my services for a few print ads in Made in Palo Alto Magazine. I tried to make them “sassy yet classy,” comment if you think they’re working (or not). Check ’em out in this post, and pick up the mag when you see it in Palo Alto!

I shot Junnoon in 2008 a couple times. The first time was overall coverage of the place, my typical new-client-gets-a-little-bit-of-everything photography. A couple months later I took a few shots to promote their outside brunch dining area, which is really nice. Fast forward two years, and Priya, the COO, calls me up saying they’ve redesigned the lounge area and need some shots for the PR Firm Wagstaff Worldwide to promote. Having worked with Wagstaff frequently in the past, I knew what they’d be looking for, and also was keenly aware that they’re used to my “several hour” turnaround time for the shots. With an evening shoot set up and those high expectations on my shoulders, I was prepped for a late night!
Even though Priya only needed a few shots of the lounge, I couldn’t sit still and just wait for people to show up. I took a few interiors, some candids of the hostesses, some shots outside, some details here and there, some cocktails… you get the picture. In the end, the shots they needed were probably lost in the middle of a full portfolio of new photos – but hey, when you pay for my services you always get more than you bargained for! So, yesterday I shot some interiors for Faz at MacArthur Park Restaurant in Palo Alto, and they liked the photos so much they wanted to see what I could do with their food. I obliged, and invited some friends to help eat the tasty morsels. If I didn’t get help eating all the time, I’d be huuuge by now! We shot a few dishes as well as some kitchen candids and some shots of some customers eating ribs. And those ribs… my God, you gotta try them. Nestled near the train station at the end of University Ave. in Palo Alto, MacArthur Park is a hidden gem among many fine dining experiences in the valley. On this rainy day I simply showed Faz Poursohi what his restaurant could look like through my eyes, vision and photography. I guess he was intrigued, as I would come back to shoot some food the next day! I used my own HDR photography technique for most of these interiors, check ’em out!

Nanoo opened her first store in Santana Row 7 years ago, and recently made the jump to Palo Alto’s Town and Country Village. I can’t wait to do a children’s fashion shoot with this clothing, it’s just so damn cute. I met up with Stacey to discuss how to promote their services – with this economy, anything even remotely considered “luxury” is sure to get cut from the family budget. Vic and Mary are a sweet, earnest couple and I had the opportunity to spend a half hour with them to get a couple portraits. They lost their son, Adam, to suicide a few years ago, and since then have tirelessly committed themselves to reinvigorate California’s suicide-prevention programs. Their good will and efforts are felt far and wide, which probably why they were recently honored with the 2010 Tall Tree Award for Outstanding Citizen, sponsored by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce and Palo Alto Weekly.

I’m not really into wearing women’s shoes, but if I were, I couldn’t go wrong at In Her Shoes, located in the Town & Country Shopping Center in Palo Alto. The thing that makes this place unique, aside from the fashionable high heels, jewelry and other accessories, is that all the profits go to The Global Fund For Women. Did I say all? Indeed I did.
