“Dough” Slingers at Kianti’s (Restaurant Lifestyle Photography) @ Santa Cruz, California

OK, so it’s not “real” pizza dough, but it still takes some mad skills and coordination to work these things! Still photos don’t really do these guys and gals justice, though – you’ve gotta see them in action on Friday and Saturday nights!

Customer Candids at Kianti’s (Restaurant Lifestyle Photography) @ Santa Cruz, California

Kianti’s knows how to treat and entertain their customers – especially the little ones! Harried parents are always delighted to see the smile on their toddler’s face once that hunk of pizza dough is plunked down on the table. The kids look up at mom, silently communicating “is this something I can play with?” A quick smile ensure that yes, yes it’s OK, and the little rugrats are entertained long enough for the main course to arrive. Here’s a few photos of customers enjoying the Kianti’s experience on a Friday night. DISCLAIMER: those blonde ones belong to me 🙂

RGB Landscapes (Business Portrait Photography) @ Menlo Park, California

About This Post

This Palo Alto landscape company is getting a website makeover from the talented folks at Personify, and part of that includes some professional portraits of the staff over there. We picked a rainy day (during a drought, no less), but we didn’t take a rain check for the shoot. We met near a duck pond in Menlo Park, hid under some trees, and got some great shots of each member of the staff. It took about 20 minutes, turning out great. Here’s a couple faves:

About This Post

Mike’s business portrait was getting a little long in the tooth, so he booked a portrait session with me to get some updated head shots and waist-up shots to use for his business. We were originally going to shoot outdoors somewhere, but it decided to pour the morning of our shoot. We decided to meet at his home in Capitola, and I quickly decided the sunroom would make a great spot to set up my portable studio lighting. It was all-white, clean and comfortable. Garrett and Family (Newborn Photography) @ Redwood City, California

About This Post

Usually newborn photos happen within the first 10 days after birth – that’s when babies are sleeping most, and are most “poseable.” However, if you miss that window of time, that doesn’t mean you can’t get adorable photos of your little one at all! They change so quickly at this early stage in their lives, it’s really quite amazing. I set up my studio in Garrett’s mom and dad’s room, on the bed. I use lighting equipment and reflectors, but it doesn’t seem to bother these little guys. After a couple different outfit and blanket options, we went outside to the back yard where we took some photos of Declan holding Garrett, and then the whole family. Enjoy my favorite photos from the newborn session below!

Stacey + Michael (Wedding Photography) @ Perry House, Monterey, California

About This Post

I absolutely love shooting at The Perry House in Monterey – it’s such a unique venue to have an intimate to average-sized wedding. If the idea of a big ballroom-style wedding turns you off, then this multi-level historic residence in the heart of Monterey may be just the wedding venue you’re looking for. I met Stacey and her fiancé Mike at the house around noon, right when the hustle and bustle was getting into second gear. Stacey and her ladies-in-waiting were sequestered to the bridal suite on the second floor getting hair and makeup done while Mike and his guys were chillin’ down below.

As you can see below, Stacey was looking amazing on her wedding day – the hair, the makeup, the gown – all flawless, and she couldn’t have looked more stunning. And you know she looked amazing, because when Mike saw her coming down the stairs, his eyes sprung a leak. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t allergies, folks. These two have a deep, unfathomable love for one another – it’s a physical presence that we could all feel. I was so excited play such an important role in capturing the memories throughout the day. We all had a blast throughout the evening – much props to my second shooter Blake Weber for getting some unique angles and moments.

Here’s my favorite photos from Stacey and Michael’s wedding. Feel free to comment below!

April 2, 2014 - 4:08 pm Jonathan Wright - Awesome!!!

Becky and Sam (Engagement Photography) @ Skyline, Embarcadero, Ferry Building, Pier 7 – San Francisco, California

Sam is a close photographer-friend of mine, so I was honored when he asked if I could take engagement photos of him and his fiancé Becky. I’ll be one of his groomsmen in a couple weeks, so it’s good we got our shoot done when we did! The weather was clear and not-too-windy, which are two wins for San Francisco on this first day of Spring. Being a fellow wedding photographer, Sam had some “gear” to bring along to the shoot – namely his  “Sqivvy,” aka portable changing station. When it’s folded up, it looks like a bag for a reflector. But open that puppy up and it’s an instant port-potty-sized room! If I hadn’t figured out how to refold the dang thing back at his place before the shoot, it definitely wouldn’t have gotten used on-location for the shoot!

We started the engagement session near De Haro St., one of those steep hillside roads that has an amazing view of the San Francisco Skyline. Since we started shooting at 5pm, we had to deal with a fair amount of traffic – getting the shots we wanted without any of us getting run over. We got some cool shots, but I really wish there weren’t so many power lines in the background!

Next, we headed down to the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building. Sam wanted to get some shots inside the ferry building on the second floor; however it closes at 6pm, and we got there a tad late… But we still got some great shots in the lobby of the hotel we parked at, plus the public park area right there had plenty of photo ops. We finished up at Pier 7, trying to avoid the pedestrians. We found lots of little places to shoot in-between our expected spots, which is what the art of location photography is all about. I primarily used a Prophoto B1 with a 3′ Octa softbox along with a couple Nikon D800 bodies – the 70-200/2.8 and 24/1.4 being my primary lenses. The B1 is an amazing battery-powered strobe, making my style of location shooting a dream to work with. Its 500ws of power was plenty of juice to balance with the sunlight – such a joy to use.

Congrats Sam and Becky, I’m really looking forward to your wedding in a couple weeks.

Ethan Bearman – Media Personality and Talk Radio Host (Lifestyle Portraits) @ New Brighton Beach, Aptos, California

Ethan Bearman changes his look every couple of years, and a quick google image search proves this is no understatement. He spends more time behind the microphone than the video camera (although he’s by no means camera-shy), but maintaining and updating his image is important. Mr. Bearman had some pretty specific shots he was looking for – and even though the second one was a more traditional in-studio type of shot, I knew a few tricks that would enable me to accomplish both during a relatively short portrait session at New Brighton Beach in Aptos. The weather was overcast, but it worked to our advantage since the direction we wanted to shoot (toward the cliffs) would have been impossible with full sun. Being a talk show host, Ethan brought a few industry props with him, which helped accentuate the exercise in contrasts we were trying to achieve. For the “emerging from the dark” photos, I employed a Vari-ND filter to kill the ambient light, and turned up the juice on my gridded 3′ Octa / Prophoto B1 flash. The result was a dramatically lit portrait that you’d never guess was shot on a sandy beach. Here’s a few of my favorites from our quick lifestyle business portrait session:

About This Post

I had the opportunity to photograph this lovely family of six at their home on the upper-west side of Santa Cruz. Their property is expertly landscaped, providing lots of little spots to shoot at. I wish we’d had more time to explore, but as it was I took way more photos than usual! Everyone was so photogenic, and really into the shoot. I can only hope I successfully captured the love that I saw among these guys. The back yard has a stunning panoramic view of the city and ocean below – not too shabby, I must say! Here’s my favorite photos form their family portrait session.

Le Papillon – Spring 2014 Menu Additions (Food Photography) @ San Jose, California

I’ve been shooting at Le Papillon restaurant in San Jose for, gosh, many years. And while my skills have definitely improved in that time period, their food started out awesome (and continues to be so). Scott Cooper is such a creative chef, I love seeing what he comes up with. When we’re collaborating, it’s definitely a dual-effort, and we build on what we’ve learned from previous shoots. Per my suggestion, Scott purchased some black laminate plastic as well as some slate rock sheets to use for some of the shots. Today’s shoot was an interesting (and challenging!) combination of high-key bright-white compositions and very dark, luminescent ones. Best Of: Engagement Photography

About This Post

I recently (like, last week) wrote a post highlighting my favorite engagement photos from the 2013 calendar year, and I thought to myself – I really need to expand on this, and turn it into a sample album. These photos need to live on paper, giving potential clients I meet that super-important tactile experience. We’re so used to digital photos remaining digital, but my goal is to also get these memories onto a more permanent medium – either in the form of framed prints, or gorgeous albums. And since 2013 was the first year I started the “Best Of” series of posts, I figured this book I wanted to create should go back further. Engagement sessions weren’t really a must-have “thing” until the last couple of years, which is kind of weird in itself, so I only had to look back to about 2010 for this album. Plus, I feel that’s when my shooting and editing style really matured into a consistent look and feel from shoot to shoot.

So, this post contains my favorite engagement photos from 2010 through 2013 in chronological order, oldest to newest. I’m sure I’ve missed some great photos here and there, but I had to keep the book to 100 pages, and I highly doubt anyone (except my dear mother) will have the fortitude to sift through that many pages. I plan on ordering the physical version of this album today – I can’t wait! Coming soon: my fave bride and groom portraits from the same time period. That…will be really hard to narrow down. I’ve shot way more weddings than engagement shoots in the past three years, and since I want to make that into my “premium” album – I have to “limit” it to 60 pages. Wish me luck, and enjoy the photos below.

Please feel free to comment at the bottom, I’d love to hear from you.

FREE Engagement Shoot: No, seriously.
I know, I know – there’s no such thing as “free” – but seriously, if you meet these requirements, you can qualify for a free mini-engagement session with NO obligation to book me for your wedding. Why would I do this? Well, I’m pretty sure that once you get to know me, and once you see what I can do with you as a couple – booking me for your wedding will be a no-brainer. Here’s how you can qualify for a free, few-strings-attached mini-engagement shoot:

  • I must be available for your wedding date
  • You must have a photography budget for my least expensive wedding package
  • Your mini-engagement session must take place in the greater Santa Cruz, California area (+/- 10 miles)

About Chris (GoodEye)
If you don’t think you have what it takes to look like one of the couples on this page – you’re wrong! With a little coaching and a couple shots of tequila (I jest…), you can get results just like all the other “normal” non-model people you see here. I’ve been shooting engaged couples for quite a few years, and I absolutely love it. It’s a challenge that I embrace – and let’s be honest, you two will be way more cooperative than a couple of cranky toddlers – right?

TRG – Group Photos and Headshots (Business Portrait Photography) @ Burlingame, California

About This Post

This architecture & design firm needed to get a group photo of the two owners and staff of 8. Since it didn’t add to the up-front cost, we also got photos of each individual to potentially use in the About Us section of their website. Since I shoot on-location, the owner was gracious to show me around the offices so I could get a sense of potential shooting locations. I ended up using the stairway landing for the group shot, as getting some elevation makes sure nobody gets hidden behind others. Plus, some of their architecture work was prominently displayed on the wall, which ties the shot together nicely. I set up a couple light sources in a meeting room to get nice, dimensional head shots of each employee with a neutral, beige-y background. Lastly, I focused on portraits of the husband & wife team in a few different locations. Here’s my favorite photos from their group and individual business portrait session.

About Chris (GoodEye)
Chris Schmauch thinks every business person deserves to have an excellent, professional portrait. Your online photo (think: LinkedIn) is increasingly the “first impression” – and we all know how important that is. A GoodEye portrait is sure to stand out among the sea of crappy selfies or point and shoot photos! Based in Santa Cruz, but traveling all over the Bay Area and beyond, consider taking advantage of Chris’ talent to capture great photos of you and your staff.

Best Of: Family Portrait Photography

About This Post

We’ve all been there – you’re at (enter big-box-photo-studio-name), the kid running the place is making minimum wage and could care less how your photos turn out – and in fact has no idea how the equipment he’s using works. Your little ones are melting down, your smiles are forced, and “Pop!” the memory is captured forever. The first photo shoot experience for many families is typically bad enough that they don’t attempt it again for a long time, if ever. This is a travesty, because there are tons of independent photographers in the Bay Area that will not only create great photos of you and your kids, but can make the whole experience a fun one.

I have three kids of my own, so I know that those first five minutes are critical, so I am prepared to get the “money” shots up front. That way if things start going downhill, we’ve got the essential shots and everything else is gravy. I really enjoy interacting with kids, and feel like I have a knack for working with them. I’m not too bad with adults, either, and yes – I know all the tricks about how to minimize your actual age 🙂

This gallery contains my favorite family photos from this past year (2013) in chronological order, January to December. Sorry if you didn’t make the cut – there’s only so much room in this gallery. In the caption of each photo is the location – just in case you’re looking for inspiration for where to have your family photos taken!

Please feel free to comment at the bottom, I’d love to hear from you.

2013 Best Of: Bride and Groom Wedding Portrait Photography

About This Post

I always try my best on the big wedding day to really put the effort into making timeless, breathtaking portraits of the newly married couple. I focus on lighting, natural (and quick) posing, and creative use of architecture or the environment to get truly memorable bride and groom formal portraits. Sometimes we only have five minutes for this part of the day (so sad…), but no matter how little time I have with the couple, I’m going to make every effort to “crush it.”

This gallery contains my favorite bride and groom portraits from this past year (2013) in chronological order, January to December. Howard (Business Headshot / Portrait Photography) @ Santa Cruz, California

I know head shots are not something most people look forward to. That’s why I make the process super-quick, easy and fun. If I can’t get a great shot of you in the first 3 minutes of shooting, then I’ve failed miserably. Howard’s main concern was not having a good place to shoot – his office is in an industrial part of Santa Cruz, and from his perspective there was no place that had a “good background.” I assured him over our back and forth emails that there is always a creative solution, no matter what, and so he trusted me. Being an “on-location” photographer (as opposed to working primarily inside a studio), I’m used to being a creative problem solver. I don’t spend a ton of time scouting out locations or stressing about the weather being perfect or any of that nonsense. Being able to do what I do over and over again, no matter the circumstances, has given me confidence in my mantra that there’s “always  a way” – and you know what? It’s this kind of Johnny-on-the-spot creative problem-solving that makes me a better photographer. My gears have to always be turning, I can’t get lazy and fall back to doing the same ol’ thing every time – like I would if I had a “standard setup” in a “standard studio.”

Anyways, back to Howard and today’s shoot. Going into it, I knew it might rain, so I was pretty much assuming we’d have to do it inside somewhere. Most offices have a conference room or some space that I can convert into a mini studio. Basically I need a few square feet of plain wall space to work with. But when I showed up and introduced myself, I could tell right away that the indoor thing was not going to happen – at least not without a serious effort of moving stuff around. So I did a quick walk around of the grounds. I found a cool spot outside the building next door, and so I promptly set up my lighting equipment – since it was overcast I had one gridded speed light to spotlight the wall of the building, and my primary soft box about 30′ away, which is where I’d place my subject. Then a few droplets started falling…

I ran-trotted back to the office and got Howard, who was wearing a nice suit-jacket and tie. I tell him where I’ve set up, and we start walking there. The drops start fulling in quicker succession. Gulp. I’m thinking to myself, I can clone out the rain spots on him… We get there, I hurriedly snap off a few shots, and it starts raining harder. Dang it. Plan B – which I’m quickly working out as we whisk back to the office. He heads indoors, I go inside the roll-up garage area. Then inspiration strikes… I go get Howard and tell him I want him to stand just inside of the garage, facing the dark interior. He looks at me like I’m crazy – “You mean that office building and those cars and parking lot will make a good background?” he remarks. Well, no, they wouldn’t, but I’d drop my aperture down to 3.2, and step back far enough from him while shooting so I could get that nice background compression out of my trusty 70-200mm lens. Setting the lights and camera up to add just enough drama to the portrait, and we’ve got a portrait any CEO would be happy with. You’d never know we were shooting in a dirty garage, that it was raining outside, and that the background was about as terrible as any could be. Cool, right?

Santa Cruz Business Portraits – Buy Once, Get Multiple Versions!

I shoot a lot of business portraits / head shots around the Bay Area – but mostly around my home town of Santa Cruz. My goal with each client is to provide a variety of portraits – usually some formal, some casual, and with multiple outfit (top) changes. I also try to get several different environment options, although because the background is really blurred out (due to lens depth-of-field effects), this is usually pretty subtle.

The purpose of this article is to address how one photo can actually turn into three or more photos. Because I shoot with Nikon D800 cameras (36 megapixel), we’re got a ton of headroom to work with each photo – which means you can crop the heck out of each shot and still retain enough quality for the most demanding print or web applications you’d need.

A standard headshot that you’d use on a business card or LinkedIn profile is generally cropped pretty close in – say, mid-chest height. However, I try to include shots that are pulled back a little, maybe showing from the waist up, or even full body. You never know when you might need to use one of your portraits for a magazine ad – where the designers will need more negative space in your photo to work with, to help make a more compelling layout in their ad design.

So you can see, options are good. But what if you loved one of your photos, but it was one of the waist-up shots,  and you don’t want to show that much for a particular use? Crop it! Like I said, the source images are huge, and you can crop that waist-high shot to a standard headshot and still have a really high-quality image. On top of cropping to create a new photo, you can also get a custom black and white version – which has better contrast than if you submitted a color photo for publication that was going to get automatically converted/printed in black and white.

Here are a few samples of creating multiple options from a single source photo. Oh, I should mention I don’t charge extra for this – you pay once for each photo, period. Bay Area Business Portrait Photos

This shot started out in landscape orientation, but was cropped to a more standard portrait version. Also, a custom b&w version from the crop.

Bay Area Business Portrait Photos

The client really liked her expression and hair in this shot, but because it was for a business card, she only needed the standard close-in composition. No problem – I cropped it and made a custom B&W version too. But she gets all three versions for the same price.
