Kianti’s Pizza & Pasta Bar (Food & Drink Photography) @ Santa Cruz, California

When I first moved my business to Santa Cruz four years ago, Kianti’s quickly became one of my family’s favorite restaurants. They have a kid-friendly atmosphere (the kids each receive a hunk of pizza dough when you sit down), the service is prompt and courteous (they enjoy a very low turnover rate among employees), and on Friday and Saturday nights the most amazing sing-and-dance performance spontaneously occurs at dinnertime. All the employees, even the guys in the kitchen, participate in the choreographed event that changes every so often. It’s a lot of fun – and of course this place wouldn’t be a favorite if the food wasn’t amazing as well (which it is!).

Back when we first discovered this place, I sent a “cold-call” email to Tracy and Kelly, the two owners of Kianti’s – seeing if they could use any professional food photography. I didn’t expect to hear from them, I mean – who is this guy emailing out of the blue anyway (I didn’t)? Fast forward to a couple weeks ago when their former-employee-turned-event-planner Hollis was charged with throwing Kianti’s 10 Year Anniversary / Employee Appreciation Party. Hollis finds me online to photograph the event – and guess what, I’m now on the radar with these ladies. Needless to say, this is the beginning of what I know will be a fruitful relationship, full of yummy photos and great food – or is it the other way around? Regardless, I’m honored to be Kianti’s photographer, and look forward to amazing things to come. Here’s a few favorites from this morning’s food shoot – look for some of these on an upcoming menu redesign!

Restaurant Opening: Fogo de Chão (Food & Commercial Lifestyle Photography) @ Santana Row, San Jose (Day Two)

This is evening two of my two-day Fogo de Chão photo shoot – check out the evening one results here.

I’ve shot quite a few Bay Area Brazilian churrascarias (steakhouses), so I’m no stranger to their gaucho servers and skewers of hot-from-the-oven hunks of meat. The food is delicious and the experience is one-of-a-kind. I was honored to work on behalf of my friends at Wagstaff to shoot the latest restaurant opening for their client Fogo de Chão. My assignment was two shoot over the course of two evenings – the first night (photos below) was a friends and family soft opening. The next night was more of a VIP event with an official ribbon-cutting with celebrity guests. Over the course of both nights, I captured behind-the-scenes action in the kitchens, portraits of gauchos with their skewers of steak, closeup and wide shots of the salad bar, the wine selection / bar area and cocktails, and lots of candid shots of customers enjoying the experience – with a few semi-staged “hero” shots of gauchos serving people. It was an ambitious assignment, given the chaos of a live event and crowded spaces. It’s extremely challenging to control the lighting in these types of uncontrolled environments, but I believe I got exactly what the client needed. Here’s a few favorite photos below from the second evening of shooting – the vip / ribbon cutting event.

Baby Kaitlin at 8 Months (Children Photography) @ Henry Cowell, Felton, California

Last time I photographed Kaitlin, she was a mere 1-month old, now look at her! She’s super adorable, and I had an awesome time photographing her with her parents at Henry Cowell State Park in Felton, California. She even got to ride on a ranger’s horse – how lucky! She sported some really cute outfits to match the cute expressions she was giving us. Here’s a few of my favorite photos from her big 8-month-old portrait photography session.

Heather (Business Headshot Photography) @ Capitola, California

Even though the weather dropped 20 degrees and became overcast an hour before our business portrait photography session was scheduled to begin, Heather was ready to brave the elements to get the shoot done! After a brief wardrobe consultation, we drove to the bluff that overlooks Capitola beach and the ocean. Even though most of my business headshots happen on-location outdoors,  they are usually shot in a way that the background is really blurred out – so the focus is always on the person and not s distracting environment or background. The most important aspect of business portrait photography is not so much the camera or other equipment – it’s how you interact with that person that will truly make or break a shoot. If they aren’t comfortable and at-ease with you, you’re not going to capture their true personality. Sometimes it’s a matter of putting the camera down for a bit and just chatting, other times it’s a matter of doing a couple shots of tequila together (haha, j/k…). Needless to say, Heather and I had plenty in common (both have a baby in the house, both got married at the same venue in Tahoe), so it wasn’t too hard to get some great, natural portraits of her. Plus, she’s a professional smiler, or so you’d think after seeing her pics! Here’s a select few from our 30 minute portrait session. Enjoy!

Published: Byington Winery Wedding (Los Gatos)

It’s always an honor to have an industry website notice one of my weddings, and ask to publish it for their audience. This wedding was one to remember, taking place at Byington Winery in Los Gatos. Here’s what Borrowed & Blue had to say about Eric and Justin’s wedding:

Get ready San Francisco because this lovely, summer’s wedding is about to have your eyes hungry for more!Byington Winery is clearly the place to be if you want to have a dreamy, outdoor wedding with the most breathtaking sights. Thanks to GoodEye Photography + Design, we’re getting a fabulous glimpse of Erica and Justin’s marvelous, outdoor day under the California sun. These images are full of such warmth that we simply can’t look away. But nothing gets us going like their stunning reception full of gorgeous florals and rustic wine barrels that give off such a cool vibe for a winery wedding. We adore everything about this lovely day, and we’re wishing Erica and Justin all the happiness in the world!

UCSC Arboretum Family Photography, Santa Cruz, California

About This Post

I’ve only shot at the UCSC arboretum once before, but it’s so expansive and littered with meandering trails, that it would take all day to fully explore. Both today’s family portrait session, as well as my last (engagement) shoot were during the dry, dry winter we’ve been suffering from, so I’m sure the arboretum isn’t exactly in its prime. Nevertheless, it is still beautiful – and a great location to shoot at.

Today I photographed an adorable family of four – including two precious sisters. They found me through their local private elementary school, where I happen to be the official school portrait photographer. They chose the location because they live on-campus, so the arboretum is basically their back yard (awesome!). We climbed trees, rocks and explored the paths together, having a great time and being rewarded with M&Ms at the end – yay! Enjoy my favorite photos 🙂

Please feel free to comment at the bottom, I’d love to hear from you.

Kaelin (Business Portrait Photography) @ Henry Cowell, Felton, California

I shot Kaelin and Jayson’s wedding last Fall, so she is no stranger to my photographic style and capabilities. I was humbled when she contacted me a couple weeks ago to take some head shots / business portraits of her. She told me she was bravely stepping into the world of Real Estate, and needed a professional shot for her business cards, LinkedIn, and all the other media outlets for such a photo. I was happy to oblige, and met up with her at the same place we took her engagement photos – Henry Cowell State Park in Felton, California.

She’s a strikingly beautiful woman, and I wish her the absolute best of luck with her new business venture. I look forward to many more shoots with them in the future. Here’s a few of my favorite photos from Kaelin’s business portrait session, enjoy!

2013 Best Of: Engagement Photography

About This Post

Engagement sessions are one of my most favorite types of photography to shoot. You’ve got a couple of people who are madly in love (usually), the chemistry is at an all time high, and they’re motivated to listen to my every direction for posing. Are they all models, in love with photos of themselves? Hell no! Most of them are apprehensive about getting their photo taken, and often weren’t planning on getting engagement photos taken at all. But I make it super easy to say “yes!” and they are always thrilled at the end to have had the experience.

[soapbox] You see, brides don’t think twice about a practice session with their hair and makeup artists – why should their photo-artist be any different? Even if a couple doesn’t plan on using the photos in save-the-dates, or framing for their walls or maybe the guest table at their wedding – the experience itself is an amazing opportunity to practice posing in a low-key environment – and getting to know the vendor you’ll spend most of your wedding day with. It’s truly a win-win, and couples that have engagement sessions not only feel more confident in their photographer AND themselves going into their wedding day, but they have the new skills to make the limited time we have together on the big day that much more productive. [/soapbox]

This gallery contains my favorite engagement photos from this past year (2013) in chronological order, January to December. Sorry if you didn’t make the cut – it’s not you, it’s me. In the caption of each photo is the location – just in case you’re looking for inspiration for where to have your engagement photos taken!

Please feel free to comment at the bottom, I’d love to hear from you.

FREE Engagement Shoot: No, seriously.
I know, I know – there’s no such thing as “free” – but seriously, if you meet these requirements, you can qualify for a free mini-engagement session with NO obligation to book me for your wedding. Why would I do this? Well, I’m pretty sure that once you get to know me, and once you see what I can do with you as a couple – booking me for your wedding will be a no-brainer. Here’s how you can qualify for a free, few-strings-attached mini-engagement shoot:

  • I must be available for your wedding date
  • You must have a photography budget for my least expensive wedding package
  • Your mini-engagement session must take place in the greater Santa Cruz, California area (+/- 10 miles)

About Chris (GoodEye)
If you don’t think you have what it takes to look like one of the couples on this page – you’re wrong! With a little coaching and a couple shots of tequila (I jest…), you can get results just like all the other “normal” non-model people you see here. I’ve been shooting engaged couples for quite a few years, and I absolutely love it. It’s a challenge that I embrace – and let’s be honest, you two will be way more cooperative than a couple of cranky toddlers – right?

Published: Roaring Camp Wedding (Felton)

I was just notified by Borrowed & Blue, a popular wedding planning website, published Jared and Jasmine’s 2011 wedding. This Roaring Camp wedding was loads of fun – I mean, you can’t go wrong when you’ve got a steam-driven train, towering redwoods, and a gorgeous and fun couple to work with. Here’s what Borrowed & Blue had to say about Jasmine and Jared’s wedding:

We’re speechless. This San Francisco beauty from GoodEye Photography + Design is to die for! To start, our beautiful bride, Jasmine, is as elegant and stunning as they come. With her gorgeous curls and fabulous smile, she is just one of those brides you’ll never forget, and the cut of her dress and touches of lace that flow throughout it are simply remarkable! With the neutral, warm colors of the bridesmaids dresses and the cooling, blueish-grey of the groomsmen, the tones of the wedding party, and the day for that matter, are breathtaking and pair incredibly well with the surroundings at Roaring Camp Railroads. Speaking of…how about the guests being transported by train to the ceremony? What a fabulous touch that will be remembered by all! We love everything about the feel of this day, and we know you will too. Enjoy!

John and Uyen (Engagement Photography) @ Gray Whale Cove State Beach, San Mateo, California

John and Uyen’s San Jose wedding is only six weeks away, so getting their engagement shoot scheduled was imperative! Luckily we were all able to synchronize our busy schedules to make it happen today. They decided on Gray Whale Cove State Beach. It’s hard to find because there’s no signs (that I know of) that indicate this location for what it is. Basically it’s right off Hwy. 1, North of Montara and South of Pacifica – and technically a part of San Mateo. Confused yet? Forget about it and just check out the amazing photos this location + this lovely couple are capable of producing.

If you’re thinking of getting an engagement here, be prepared for gusty high winds, old naked dudes and a long stairway down to (and up from ) the beach. Not for the feint of heart, for sure! Enjoy my favorites below…

Fallon and Joe (Engagement Photography) @ Capitola, California

These two got engaged yesterday, and since they’re both active military (Air Force), they had 48 hours to fit an engagement session in. I pulled a few strings and moved a few things around, but was glad it all worked out. Fallon is also training to compete in bodybuilding competitions, so she definitely had a striking look that I worked with for their engagement shoot. A little country, a little beach romance – Capitola is a city that can accommodate all kinds of looks. Enjoy my favorites below!

Keely + Warren (Wedding Photography) @ Hillsborough Racquet Club, Hillsborough, California

About This Post

Keely and Warren decided to tie the knot at Hillsborough Racquet Club in – you guessed it – Hillsborough, California. Being a February wedding, the skies were dark, threatening rain; but even though everything was happening indoors, the weather decided to chill anyways. I hadn’t met the couple before their wedding day, which is always a little strange – but luckily they are very nice people (phew!). Taste-Full Events ran the whole show – their food (what, six or eight courses?!?) was to die for. So good.

Here’s my favorite photos from Keely and Warren’s wedding. Feel free to comment below!

2013 Best Of: 70 Creative Wedding Ring Photos

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I’m sure there will be many marriage proposals happening today, and in the spirit of that love, I’ve got a special article for you all.

Last year about this time I wrote “80 Inspiring and Creative Wedding Ring Photos” – and it was so popular, I decided to try and make it an annual thing. I absolutely love the challenge of taking this tiny, expensive, little sparkly things and doing something creative with them – either at the end of a couple’s engagement shoot, or at some point on their wedding day. Do I always knock it out of the park? Hell no. But I try, and the photos below are the fruits of that labor. My hope is that maybe a couple of these will inspire other photographers challenged with shooting wedding rings.

On a technical note, these were all shot using a 60mm macro lens on a Nikon D800 camera. Most of them are lit by an off-camera soft box powered by 7 speed lights. These can all be accomplished with less speed lights of course, but natural light alone isn’t gonna cut it if you’re going for the type of look you see in these photos. Some of the indoor photos were probably just one on-camera flash bouncing off a nearby white wall. I’m generally shooting in the F8-F22 range for ring photos – even with those settings the depth of field can get really shallow.

Feel free to comment below, I’d love to hear from ya!

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I love finding nooks in rocks – usually at a beach – something that will provide some shadow, depth and texture to the shot.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

Sometimes I’ll task the couple to find interesting “found objects” in the area we’re shooting, with my goal to creatively implement them somehow. They feel good that they’re actively participating in the end result, which I think is cool.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

Setting the rings in the context of the wedding venue creates a solid visual memory and sense of place. I just love North Block Hotel’s coasters, they’re very graphically interesting (in Yountville, California)

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I remember setting up this shot took FOREVER. Everything was round and slippery – as soon as one object was set up, something else would slip and everything would come crashing down. I just love the shapes, the depth and simplicity of this shot – and the fact that I actually got everything to stay without using superglue!

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

If you do nothing else with a couples’ rings, use the flowers in the bouquet. I know it’s not original, and this won’t win any awards, but the bride will love it.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

The last thing I want to do is have a ring slip off the table and roll around on the ground. The few times it’s happened, I practically had a heart attack. Capturing motion with the rings is really hard, and lt.’s face it – pretty stupid to attempt. I felt pretty confident working with the groom’s ring here, though, and spinning it with a flick, like you’d do with a coin. I dragged the shutter after the flash a bit to try and capture the movement, which I did (a little) I would like it better if it was closer to the other rings, but if you’ve ever flick-spun coins you know there’s quite a bit of chaos theory involved, so I consider myself lucky to capture what I did.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I am pretty sure that’s asparagus and peacock feathers. I don’t remember if this was part of the bride’s bouquet – but you can’t pass up that kind of color and texture. This is a little busy, but still kinda neat.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I saw this spotted rock on the beach and I had to use it somehow. Using a small, weathered shell propped up the ring, making for a more interesting composition than just putting the ring flat on the rock.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

Apparently the Ice Plant is an invasive species along our California coasts, but its thick, succulent-like structure and semi-translucent skin can make for some pretty cool ring photos. I believe this was shot at Carmel River State Beach.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

Another ice plant shot, this time with an empty mussel shell the the couple found.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I usually like my ring shots really close in and tight, but sometimes you need to pull back a little. Feel the zen?

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

Getting real close here, I liked the crystalline structure of the quartz rock these rings are placed on – nice contrast and texture, and the background is blurred sufficiently to not distract.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I’m using the splinters of this redwood (?) log in order to prop the ring in a vertical position. The different colors of the wood and the bokeh really add to this shot.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I’m using the creative wedding favor origami the bride and groom made to complement the rings – which take a back seat in this shot.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I couldn’t resist using the fun / realistic bride and groom cake toppers in this shot.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

This is an interesting perspective for joining the two rings – I think it only worked because of the ridges pin the groom’s ring and the sharp angles of the engagement ring – usually this joining wouldn’t be possible. Just when you think there’s only so many ways to lay out rings, some new opportunity presents itself.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

These seaweed bulb-things are often the perfect size for doing this. Any time you can keep the ring from laying flat on a surface, there’s interesting and creative opportunities.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

The shape and color of the lemons dominate this shot, but are out of focus enough to ensure the ring gets most of your attention.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

The side-lighting of this shot is critical to bringing out the texture and variety of greens in this leafy stem. Even though it’s shot straight-on, it has a wonderful depth.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

This is another arrangement of rings that is only possible because of the “ribbed” texture of the bands – they “stick” in place, where smooth bands would just fall flat. Amazing engagement ring too!

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

Can you tell what this is? Spoiler alert – it’s a vintage fan. I loved the bold color and circular rings, echoing the shape of the rings. Nice.

Creative Wedding Ring Photos - 2013

I was hesitant to do this – but you know how I like found objects. The bride’s retainer was sitting on the side of the bed, so I just moved it around a tad and placed the rings in the middle. At first glance it looks like an x-ray image or something. I just love the texture and simple composition – even if it is kinda gross.

Published: Clos LaChance Wedding (San Martin)

Borrowed & Blue, a popular wedding planning website, just emailed me that they published Rachel and Brandon’s amazing winery wedding from 2010. This Clos LaChance wedding was simply epic – stunning views of the vineyard, a beautiful and fun couple, and great vibes from the family and friends. Here’s what Borrowed & Blue had to say about Rachel and Brandon’s wedding:

Rachel and Brandon had a marvelous summer wedding at Clos La Chance Winery, so marvelous in fact that we’re about to pack our own bags and head to California! These images from GoodEye Photography + Designhave us reeling. From the stunning, winery views to the elegant, yet simple, table setting–we absolutely adore everything we see. But the personal moments at the reception have caught our eye the most. We love GoodEye Photography + Design‘s ability to capture such tender moments and freeze them in time, so Rachel and Brandon can revisit them whenever they want. Cheers to you two lovebirds!

Morgan + Cliff (Engagement Photography) @ Natural Bridges Beach, Santa Cruz, California

Wow, there were so many keepers from this romantic and sexy engagement session, I had such a hard time picking my favorites. Cliff pulled some strings to get a last-minute photo permit to shoot at Natural Bridges, one of Santa Cruz’s most amazing natural parks; it’s got it all – fields, pine trees, sycamore groves, wooden fences, a pond, monarch butterfly habitat, oh, and this little thing called a beach with the iconic natural bridge that gives the location its namesake. If you can’t decide on one outdoor location for your engagement shoot, Natural Bridges has a little bit of everything. But as cool as the environment is, engagement shoots are all about the people, and Cliff and Morgan were most excellent subjects indeed. These two have a natural chemistry, and fit together naturally – this may sound weird, but you’d be surprised how much direction I give in my shoots. These guys were naturals, and I’m glad it was cool out ’cause things were getting HOT early on! We did a lot of hiking around, but sorry guys, I burned the most calories, which means two beers for me later on!! Anyways, here’s my faves, laid out album style… Oh, check all the photos out at www.goodeyephotography.com.

Kianti’s 10th Anniversary (Event Photography) @ Santa Cruz, California

Kianti’s just held their 10th anniversary, a commendable  achievement for any business, no less a restaurant! The amazing thing I realized about this group of employees is how loyal they are. Most of the managers recognized had been there the majority of the time, with a few being there from day one. Co-owners Tracy and Kelly are clearly doing things right over there. The party, planned by former employee-turned-event-planner Hollis Ferguson, had an amazing casino theme, complete with craps and blackjack tables manned by the pros at Pair a Dice. Plus, Elvis. Need I say more? Here’s some of my favorite photos from the night, great job everyone! See all photos here.
